Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Jerry flourishing - "Jazz Alley" in Fort Collins - mural by Terry McNerney

http://www.archive.org/details/Jazz_Alley_in_Fort_Collins

The Jazz Alley mural was painted by artist Terry McNerney over the past couple of years. I've been watching pieces of this mural being created inside a vacant office space at the new Mitchell Building. Not once did I realize what was happening, or that a mural was being put together. This mural is inside a public alley that cuts through the Mitchell Block Building (Mountain Ave & Walnut St), in downtown Fort Collins, Colorado (next door to the Food Coop). The alley just "opened up" recently. And now I'm seeing the whole thing put together. It's beautiful!

The Jazz Alley mural runs the length of this curved alley. It is painted over marble. It is towering two stories tall. The second story level is not shown in this photo gallery. What's painted on the upper level and not shown here is a second story view of old town Fort Collins - which is this location.

I tracked down artist Terry McNerney today and personally thanked him for producing this piece of art for our neighborhood.

Wow!!! I used to live about a block from there. He should have put Jerry in black, though :-)

In a brief "interview" yesterday, artist Terry McNerney told me a few things about his mural:

• unresolved feedback from Deadheads - "Jer never wore tie-dye t-shirts"
• painting was fixed due to feedback from Deadheads - "Jer's finger needs to be chopped off "
• "Sonny & Cher" - "Cher" (painted next to Roy Orbison) is wearing cowboy hat; "Sonny" is actually CSU football coach Sonny Lubick (painted next to John Lennon)

"local musicians" - northern end of Jazz Alley mural features paintings of Fort Collins musicians

I was intending to interview artist Terry McNerney, and get him recorded describing who is painted on his mural, and why it was painted this way. Most of all, I wanted to be the first person in the world to get "the word out" (on The Archive) about his artwork. I do believe I am the first person in the world to achieve this, and I consider it a badge of honor.

I don't own any digital cameras, video taping equipment, or any professional video editing software. So I knew I'd have to rely on the generosity and help of others to get these photos uploaded. Yesterday I was expecting to somehow meet the artist. I thought I could maybe set up a time for next week to photograph or videotape this mural along with his comments.

Once I contacted him yesterday, Terry met me in Jazz Alley and began sharing a few things about the funding source for the his mural. I can tell you that he emphasized to me the non-commercial aspects of this project. I promised him that the fruits of my effort "to report about his mural" were indeed destined for the non-commercial free public library at The Internet Archive.

Then "a photographer" (dude with an iPhone) stumbled into Jazz Alley at that moment and he was overcome with emotions. So that's how and why we took these pictures yesterday. I will need to get back with artist Terry McNerny, and see if we can get him do a complete debriefing about the paintings in his mural. There are local characters mingling throughout this mural. The northern end of the mural features local Fort Collins area talent. I did not take any notes from Terry, and I cannot name some of the names for you. I apologize for the temporary confusion and the mystery this artwork brings. But, I think that's part of the fun of interpreting art.

Very nice, but have to agree with Althea. I don't remember ever seeing a picture of Jerry wearing tie dye.

But yeah, of course the black tee was standard issue...

[I just knew I had a mental image of Jerry in a purple tie dye, and yet, as you allude, you CANNOT find a "still" of him at least not easily on the web.]

I left photographer Easton Ramirez alone in Jazz Alley yesterday for a few minutes. That's when he shot this iPhone video. He just emailed it to me, and I just finished uploading it to The Archive.

I don't know what spider hole he's hiding himself in, but other than handing out a free case of Laphroaig, I don't know what'll get him out.

"slack bladder"?

Here's something to remember when you're older - never pass up a bathroom, never waste a hard-on, and never trust a fart.

Some of you know I'm in the travel biz....I find it hard not to laugh when people ask for rates/information in Chartres, France. I think Skies lived in Chartres...isn't that right BD? Perhaps I was simply mislead by her odor.

I cannot reveal any incriminating information that may help lead others to my true lady love. NAH! Just follow your nose...

But I can't think of Chartres w/o thinking of Chagall.

Thank-you for the exciting preview of upcoming attractions. Now I can avoid these topics at my physical next week by your thoughtfulness B. I would think that #2 and #3 could lead to some sticky situations.

Though it worked on at least two levels, it was really just a stolen line from the Black Adder series...so I used it in its entirety...but again, it seemed appropriate, and I knew you could take it.

There is the pic from the Yale bowl 71 where he is wearing a blue-ish
Dye;selland arena 78 he's wearing one. Sure someone more clever than I can produce the proof.
Its a nice tribute. From all accounts, pretty sure it wouldn't have bothered the subject.
But yes, black tee or blue denim.

I stand corrected. And there is no shame in being proven wrong by the likes of Sir William, SDH and Monte as it seems their powers of recollection exceed mine. I think it was Robin Williams who said, "If you remember the 60's, you weren't there."....Photobucket

Hey, trust me, Bill--it was hard...I searched for 5 min scrolling thru plenty of stills on the web, literally a couple of hundred, and found nothing.

But, it stuck there, along with one or two other trivial thoughts until I recalled he was "moving" in this mental image, instantly pictured something from FestExp, and then bingo--just had to find it at YTube.

Gave me something to do this morning while getting thru the mandatory three cups of coffee.
